The Salifert Flatworm Exit is a highly effective, fast-acting treatment designed to eradicate parasitic flatworms (Convolutriloba retrogemma) from saltwater and reef aquariums without harming fish, corals, or other marine invertebrates when used correctly.
Product Overview
- Primary Target: Eliminates destructive brown and red acoel flatworms.
- Safety Profile: Safe for reef inhabitants (fish, corals, snails, and crabs) when guidelines are followed.
- Treatment Type: Concentrated liquid additive.
- Coverage: One bottle typically treats up to 1,200 liters (approx. 300 gallons).
How It Works
The product itself is non-toxic to your aquarium's biological filtration and reef life. However, it quickly paralyzes and kills flatworms. The primary danger to your tank does not come from the chemical, but from the highly toxic bodily fluids released by a mass die-off of flatworms.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Siphon First: Suck out as many visible flatworms as possible before dosing to minimize the toxic bio-load after they die.
- Prepare Water Changes: Have at least 25% to 50% fresh saltwater ready for an immediate change.
- Prepare Carbon: Place high-quality, fresh activated carbon in a canister filter or reactor, ready to turn on.
- Turn Off Equipment: Turn off UV sterilizers, ozone generators, and carbon filtration (keep protein skimmers running).
- Dose: Add 1 drop for every 4 liters (1 gallon) of tank water.
- Observe and Filter: Within minutes, flatworms will blow around and die. Start siphoning dead worms immediately. Turn on your activated carbon filter right away to absorb released toxins.
- Water Change: Perform a large water change (at least 25%) 6 hours after dosing, or sooner if livestock shows signs of stress.
Critical Safety Warnings
- Do Not Undertreat: Dosing too little can cause flatworms to develop a resistance to the chemical.
- Watch for Oxygen Depletion: Dying flatworms deplete dissolved oxygen. Ensure your powerheads and protein skimmer are maximizing surface agitation.
- Second Dose: A second treatment is often required 7 to 10 days later to kill newly hatched flatworms, as the product does not kill unhatched eggs.
